Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Office for Disarmament Affairs, New York. The Political Affairs Officer will report to the Chief of Unit. The Unit is responsible for facilitating the elaboration of a legally binding treaty establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at by the States of the region.

ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: \u2022 Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. \u2022 Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible. \u2022 Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat. \u2022 Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to the Chief of the Unit. \u2022 Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the Office and unit. \u2022 Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other relevant international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. \u2022 Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations. \u2022 Participates in provision of secretariat services to the annual Conference elaborating a legally binding treaty establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, other relevant meetings or subsidiary body meetings. \u2022 Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. \u2022 Performs other related duties as required.

EducationAdvanced university degree (Master\u2019s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.

Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in political report drafting is required. Experience in project development, implementation and reporting is desirable. 2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. Arabic is desirable.
