Assistant Curator – University Art Museum, Laramie Job Title Curator of Academic Engagement Job Purpose Under the supervision of the Director and Chief Curator, facilitate the use of the UW Art Museum’s collections for academic and teaching purposes. Initiate, plan, and lead university class visits, coordinate academic projects such as faculty and student research collaborations and symposia, and plan, research, and install two exhibitions annually in the Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery. May supervise interns or teaching artists, perform research, lead art‑making classes, and conduct administrative tasks. Responsibilities Research upcoming courses and coordinate with faculty to integrate relevant classes into museum visits. Create lesson plans and supplemental written/digital materials, including art‑making activities. Use inquiry‑based, object‑based teaching to facilitate university class visits. Assist the Collections Manager with pulling/putting objects for class visits and schedule usage of non‑displayed artwork. Create and lead workshops for faculty and graduate students on object‑based research and teaching techniques. Supervise individuals in storage or the print study room during research and assignments (faculty, scholars, students). Teach courses according to specialty and advise students in the Museum Studies minor as needed. Curate spring and fall semester Teaching Gallery exhibitions in partnership with up to four faculty members. Coordinate faculty and class art installations as required. Participate in curation of exhibitions related to the museum’s permanent collection and evaluate exhibitions. Initiate collaborations across university departments, including Science Initiative, Engineering, Health Sciences, Energy Resources, and Honors. Manage the use and schedule of the Art Museum’s Resource Room and Print Study Room. Design and organize programs related to exhibitions to engage the university community and conduct program assessment. Serve as the primary UWAM Faculty Senate representative. Attend and present innovative programs and museum resources at campus workshops and relevant conferences. Minimum Qualifications MA in art history or a related humanities field. At least 1 year of experience in a museum or university setting. At least 1 year of experience working with and interpreting art or historical objects. Valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP. Desired Qualifications PhD in Art History or related humanities field, ABD accepted. 2–3 years in museums, academic, or instructional settings, including work with faculty and students. 1 year of college‑level teaching experience as a teaching assistant, museum teacher, or instructor of record. 1 year of museum or gallery experience with art or historical objects. Strong visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Highly developed organizational capabilities and ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment. Excellent writing and research skills.
